According to Wikipedia, bluegrass is a form of American Roots music and is a sub-category of country music.  Bluegrass traditionally contains only acoustic string instruments and vocal components.  The most common stringed instruments include the banjo, guitar, mandolin, upright bass, resonator guitar, fiddle, dulcimer and autoharp.  The best way to describe it is to hear it.  Following are some videos from YouTube of some traditional sounding bluegrass music.

Earl Scruggs was one of the pioneers of the three-finger style of banjo picking.  One of his most popular tunes is Foggy Mountain Breakdown shown below.  Notice there is some harmonica in this too.
