Jan Zale

Jan was born in Detroit and moved to Arizona in 1978. She is the director of recreation for a retirement community. She met her husband, Mike, through bluegrass at Kovacs Korner in Apache Junction. She started playing bass in 1991 and is a former member of Gold Rush and Cabin Fever. Jan looks forward to helping the ABA grow membership throughout the Valley.


Rick Rhodes

Rick grew up in the Washington, DC area always active in musical activities.  In high school, he was a classical bassist and played guitar very well.  After high school, Rick settled in Tucson where he played electric bass in a country rock band called Sippin' Whiskey for 8 years.  In 2002, Rick received a banjo for Christmas, and, after a couple of years, plugged into the bluegrass community.  Rick has been a member of the ABA board since 2007.


Samuel Kerch

Sam Kerch has been playing the banjo since late 2006.  Rick Rhodes, ABA's Vice-Chairman patiently provided lessons for four years beginning in 2007 while Sam's fingers tried to figure out what to do. He has played trombone and baritone since elementary school.  Mr. Kerch is a CPA and is in charge of keeping the ABA books.  He also manages the website and updates.  Sam is married and has three kids.  The oldest two are learning instruments as well, guitar and fiddle.  They play in church as the "KFB" or Kerch Family Band.


Igor Glenn

Igor's Bluegrass roots go back to the 1960's festivals and jams in Alabama with members of Bill Monroe's band. Igor previously ran four festivals in the Phoenix area in the 1970's. Igor has a music degree from ASU, and is also working with Jam Pack.

Ben was born in El Paso, TX. His passion for music started at the age of eight with 88 white and black keys (aka a piano). Two years later he started playing drums and percussion instruments. Ben has played many different genres of music from Gospel to Rock, Ska, Jazz, and in 2009 Bluegrass. Ben started playing the mandolin and has been participating in many of the beginner jams as well as the others. He is currently the Editor for the ABA Beacon. Ben’s introduction to Bluegrass began in 2009 after learning to pluck a few strings on the bass at a beginners jam. Ben enjoys listening to and playing music.

Val loves to listen to all types of music but bluegrass and 70's rock are her favorites. She's been an ABA member for 5 years, the same amount of time that she's been married to Galen Anderson. Val doesn't play an instrument but has threatened to! Val has always loves dogs and has her cube at Intel Corporation in Chandler decorated with wall to wall dogs. She's been an administrative assistant there for 27 years.

Ken Killebrew

Ken is a Native Arizonan born in Jerome.  Ken moved to Phoenix where he attended Maryvale High School.  After high school, Ken attended Glendale Community College.  Ken is currently working as a plumber in the Phoenix area.  In 2008, Ken found a true love for Bluegrass music with his favorite being Bluegrass Gospel.  Ken has been playing in the Valley with the Pew Boys, Brush Arbor Revival and Red Rock Crossing.  Ken enjoys playing bass, banjo and guitar.
